The educational and medical institutions in the state now may not find the government land at the cheaper rates as the government has decided to revise its land lease and transfer policy. The policy  also will deal with the 1,200 government properties in Mumbai given out on  lease.

After the Congress president Sonia Gandhi directed all the Congress-led governments to act tough while allotting the lands last year, the state has started working on the formulation of the policy.

The acquisition of the properties after expiry of the period has become herculean task for it. The state has not been able to recover the additional rate nor restore the properties due to the litigations.

“The government lands leased out to the educational and other social causes are being exploited commercially. The lands are leased out and transferred to the institutions at the rate as low as 10% of the ready reckoner price. We have decided to change this,” said an official from the department.

The policy also is expected to revise the rate of the lease. “The state attempted to hike the lease in 1999 and the resolution was issued. We had to scrap the decision following a high court order.
The revised policy will have new rates keeping the court order in mind. The properties with the expired lease period will have to follow the revised norms from the date of the expiry,” he added.

Swadheen Kshatriya, principal secretary, revenue department said, “The formation of the policy is the top priority and it will brought before the cabinet soon. The matter deals with various departments including finance, urban development and hence their opinion will be sought too,” he added.
