Home minister RR Patil said the state government is probing the alleged provocative statements made recently by Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena founder Raj Thackeray.

Addressing a press conference in Sangli on Friday, Patil said appropriate action would be taken.

Nirupam had recently said that Mumbai was being controlled by North Indians and “they can bring Mumbai to a halt if they chose”.

Uddhav, in reaction to the statement, had threatened to knock off Nirupam’s teeth. Raj on Friday blamed the Shiv Sena for making Nirupam a big leader in 1990s.

Patil said that these leaders are eyeing their respective vote banks and hence making such provocative statements. “People belonging to different religions and regions are living peacefully in Mumbai. The state government will not tolerate it if anybody tries to create a rift and tension between different communities,” Patil said.
