The State Government Employees Central Union (SGECU), Pune, has condemned the extended freeze on recruitments in many sectors by the state government, and plans protest actions from July 25.

At a press conference on Wednesday, members of the SGECU said it was unfair on the part of the state government not to conduct recruitment in spite of having vacancies.

“Out of five lakh seats nearly 30% seats in various departments of the government lie vacant. This adds to the work pressure of existing employees as they have to take added responsibilities,” said SGECU president Ravindra Jagtap.

The government froze recruitments in June 2010 for a year, which it has now extended for the year 2011. According to president of the Maharashtra State Revenue Employees Union, Laxmikant Pacharane, SGECU will protest from July 25 to take forward their demands to the state government.

“We will wear black ribbons to work till July 25 and then go on protest. It is time the state government understands our needs,” he said. SGECU demands that the government resume recruitments, recruitment on compassionate grounds, brakes on privatisation and liberalisation, and abolishing the contract system.

It also demanded scrapping of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority bill. The protests would include rallies all over the state at the respective zilla parishad offices.
