The Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation’s survey to study standard of living of people, pattern of household expenditure and employment and unemployment situation in the country got underway in parts of the state on Friday.

The survey, which will be carried out in ‘household consumer expenditure’ and ‘employment and unemployment’ categories till June 2012, is intended at helping government frame its policies in these regards besides providing inputs for Centre’s five-year plan.

“The study is aimed at throwing light on standard of living of countrymen and nature of employment, earnings, education and skills of household members,” said an official from national survey sample office, which is the field survey department under the ministry. He added that though the survey work has got underway, actual field work is expected to begin only around mid-July.

The survey will assess functioning of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and also cover indebtedness of households, he said.

Across the country, 16,064 villages and 11,700 urban blocks have been selected. Of these, 7,616 villages and 5,268 urban blocks will be studied by central government teams, while the remaking will be done by state. The ministry has informed that from Maharashtra more than 2,268 villages/urban blocks will be considered for study by Central agencies. Out of the selected villages/blocks, detailed studies of 24 households in each will be conducted.

“We are expecting to study around 6,66,336 households across the nation. Even if we consider that every family studied at length has five members, 33 lakh people will be covered at the end of the day giving us critical inputs for policy prescription for both the central and state governments,” the official said.
