The Maharashtra Housing (Regulation and Development) Act 2012 will bring in transparency and discipline in transactions of flats and put a check on malpractices, said governor K Sankaranarayanan at a function to mark the 52nd anniversary of the formation of the state held at Shivaji Park on Tuesday.

“The Act will remove information asymmetry by ensuring full disclosure by developers and ensure compliance of agreed terms between developers and buyers.”

Sankaranarayanan also gave an assurance that the state government will provide houses to mill workers at affordable rates.

“The cost of each of the 6,948 houses built by Mhada for mill workers has been reduced from Rs8.34 lakh to Rs7.50 lakh. Free houses will be given to the next kin of the mill workers who had lost their lives in the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement,” he said.
Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, chairman of the Maharashtra legislative council Shivajirao Deshmukh, former CM Manohar Joshi and mayor Sunil Prabhu were among those present at the event.

After unfurling the national flag and inspecting the ceremonial parade, the governor spoke on the drought situation in Maharashtra, the hardships farmers face and measures taken by the state government to tackle it.

He also lauded the state’s  achievement in implementing the Panchayat Raj effectively. “The state has received an award of Rs2 crore from the Ministry of Panchayati Raj Government of India for maximum devolution of powers to Panchayat Raj institutions for the third consecutive year.”

He pointed out that this is significant as it is the birth centenary year of former chief minister YB Chavan, who has done a pioneering work in strengthening the Panchayati Raj institutions.

Sankaranarayanan also inaugurated a philatelic exhibition titled Maharashtra Through Postage Stamps, organised by the Maharashtra Postal Circle at the General Post Office complex. He later attended a function at the Mayor's Bungalow and felicitated 13 former mayors.

Several parties and organisations also held functions on the occasion of Maharashtra Day. MNS chief Raj Thackeray and RPI (Athavale) president Ramdas Athavale paid tribute to the martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement at Hutatma Chowk.
