There is goods news in store for the nearly five lakhs students studying in vocational institutes in the state. The state government has decided to upgrade vocational education to create more opportunities for these students by setting up an independent vocational university, adding mainstream degree courses and post graduate options in vocational subjects.

After a missive from the Central government to bridge gaps between vocational students and their counterparts in mainstream courses, the state higher and technical education department is now working on plans to set up an independent vocational university that will offer degree courses in vocational subjects which will be equal to various mainstream bachelor degree courses such as BSc and BCom.

To ensure that the vocational courses match up to international standards, the department is studying the current vocational education system in countries like Germany and China. The department is also working on a roadmap for Masters and PhD degrees in vocational subjects. To promote mobility in the field, plans to start bridge courses that will allow vocational students to switch to traditional educational institutes are also being considered.

“Unfortunately, many students who are studying in vocational institutes are forced to take up jobs after their courses as they do not have opportunities for further education. Also, since they do not have PG degrees, they have limited job opportunities,” said Rajesh Tope, minister for higher and technical education.

The state government has now set up a task-force, consisting of industry experts and renowned educationists, headed by Swati Mujumdar, director of Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning in Pune. This panel will evaluate the standard of education imparted in vocational institutes and suggest necessary reforms so that the government can come up with a policy for vocational education.
