College students will now help the Maharashtra state government to improve the dipping child sex ratio in the state. In one of its numerous attempts to improve the child sex ratio, the government is approaching college students to help create awareness through them and change society’s attitude towards the girl child.

Varsha Gaikwad, the minister for child and women welfare, said, “We have been approaching the colleges across the state. The NCC wing of the colleges will be roped in for spreading awareness. Sealing sonography machines, punishing the doctor or other people involved in sex determination are on, but that wont solve the root cause of the dipping sex ratio unless and until people change their attitude towards the girl child.” The team formed by the women and child welfare department of the state government will visit the colleges from this month end.

Maharashtra’s ratio, calculated for children aged up to 6 years, stands well below the national average of 914 girls per 1,000 boys. Meanwhile Mumbai’s child sex ratio fell from 922 girls for every 1,000 boys in 2001 to 874 girls for every 1,000 boys in 2011.In contrast, the child sex ratio in the suburbs slipped from 923 girls for every 1,000 boys in 2001 to 910 girls for every 1,000 boys in 2011.The drop in the number of girls in the city is almost four times that in the suburbs.

“Even in an urban city like Mumbai, it is a problem. There are certain pockets in our society that still prefer male children. We are making short films on daughters who have made their parents feel proud. This will encourage others and create a positive attitude towards the girl child,” said Gaikwad.

Dr Asha Advani, special officer, family welfare department, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said, “Our information says that people go out of the city to perform sex determination tests and go for selective abortions. This is the reason why changing people’s attitude towards girl child is important.”

The government is also planning to form a central committee to look after all matters related to PCPNDT Act implementation and also see that existing committees work properly.
