A 24-year-old Malwani-based catering boy was arrested for allegedly hurling acid on the face of a 22-year-old girl at Goregaon station earlier on Tuesday evening after she named him a suspect. According to the police, Aarti Thakur named Nasir, alias Pinto, Shaikh as suspect. Aarti was Shaikh’s tenant at Malwani for several years, leading the police to suspect a love angle in the incident.

Confirming the arrest, senior inspector PM Karyakarte of Borivli railway police, which made the arrest, said, “Shaikh was booked for attempted murder (section 307 of the IPC) and remanded in police custody till February 7 by the Borivli railway court on Wednesday.” During his interrogation, Shaikh revealed that he did not like Aarti’s close friendship with his younger sister Ruby.

Apparently, this was the third attack on Aarti. Earlier on December 9, 2011, an unidentified man assaulted her with a blade at Malwani, following which she lodged a complaint with the Malwani police. “Living at Nalasopara for the past two months, she was slapped by an unidentified man at Nalasopara two weeks ago,” added Karyakarte.

Aarti, an HSC passout from SNDT college, has been working as a telephone operator in a private firm at Goregaon for the past one year. In the incident that took place at the Goregaon station, Aarati approached the ticket punching machine, with her face covered with her dupatta. This was when Shaikh allegedly hurled acid at her.
