If things go as planned, people may be able to go to Goa and Konkan from Mumbai by the sea instead of sweating it out in buses or trains.

After setting in motion the water transport project on the eastern coast of the city from Mumbai to Nerul, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is now planning to extend it to the Konkan coastline and neighbouring Goa.

The MSRDC has invited expressions of interest from vessel operators for participating in the passenger and Ro-Ro water transport from Ferry Wharf to Nerul and from Ferry Wharf to Mandwa.

The corporation has invited bids in two separate packages for the construction of terminal facilities for passenger and Ro-Ro services at Ferry Wharf and Nerul (Rs209 crore) and at Mandwa (Rs68 crore).

“We will examine if the water transport project can be extended up to Konkan and Goa,” said a senior MSRDC official, adding that the passenger water transport project could cover the jetties on the Konkan coast.

The official said work contract on the Ferry Wharf to Nerul and Ferry Wharf to Mandwa passenger and vehicle water transport project will be awarded by June.

Once completed, this project will enable people to travel from one end to another in just half an hour, the official said. The tariff for these services is expected to have a cap of Rs5 per kilometre, he added.
