You may soon be able to travel in air-conditioned Volvo buses to Bengaluru and Panjim from Mumbai. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is in the process of finalising details for starting these two new routes in the Ashwamedh and Shivneri brand of buses.

The Ashwamedh brand, which was launched in mid-March this year with just one route (Mumbai-Pune), will now have a Mumbai-Pune-Bengaluru route. It has a more comfortable range of AC Volvos known as Jumbo Multi-axel Volvo buses which are longer and have more comfortable sitting arrangement. They have more powerful air-conditioning than those that run under the Shivneri brand.

Considering the rising commuter demand in the peak summer season, a fresh AC Volvo route under Shivneri will also be started between Mumbai Central and Panjim. A spokesperson for the MSRTC said that details like the tariff structure, number of stoppages, etc. for the new routes under both the brands are being worked out. “For the services to Bengaluru, it could take 8 to 10 days for the details to come out; and for Goa, about 10 to 15 days,” said the MSRTC spokesperson. “You can expect the services to roll out after a fortnight.”

He added that the services will be better than the private players because the former has an infrastructure in place. For instance, there are bus depots or stands on almost all major stoppages. The commuters will be immensely benefited from them, he claimed.

The private players, or even Airawat, the AC Volvo brand of services operated by KSRTC, do not have the same benefits. They have to go around the city looking for passengers. But we get passengers at our bus stands as we do not only depend on private agents for selling tickets. We have experienced drivers for safe travel.”
