The proposal to give the Maharashtra state board students access to a copy of their answer sheets for verification has hit a hitch. Experts say such a practice will be a “breach of confidentiality”.
Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh already allow students to access their answer sheets in case of a dispute.
A team of state board officials, which recently returned from Gujarat after study the system there, said it was difficult to implement it in Maharashtra.
According to a former board official, the Maharashtra state board regulations state that the answer sheet is a confidential document.
“It is like a contract signed between the student and the examiner.
If there are some discrepancies reported in the paper, the examiner, the moderator and the chief moderator will not remain confidential. Of the 16 lakh students who appear for the SSC exam, hardly 50,000 are interested in getting their marks verified. So why breach the law for such a small number?” said the official.
An official said on condition of anonymity, “The numbers of students applying for verification is less than one per cent in Gujarat. In Maharashtra, the numbers of students appearing for the exams are very high. It will be more chaotic if such a system comes into place. There is no comparison.”
According to the existing system, the students can only apply for verification of marks. In such a case, the state board on receipt of the application traces the students’ answer sheets and checks the totaling of marks.
