Five days after the Bombay high court ruling imposed restrictions on hawking activity during the Bandra fair, a section of the affected vendors approached the civic body on Monday.

Candle vendors, who set shop on the roads leading to the Mount Mary Church during the eight-day feast, demanded that BMC give them preference over other hawkers while auctioning stalls for the festival.

The demand was made during a meeting held at the additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar’s chamber at the civic headquarters.

A delegation, led by BJP group leader Ashish Shelar, met Mhaiskar over the issue.

A court ruling on September 1 had asked the BMC to restrict the number of hawking stalls during the feast to 165. “More than 50% of the stalls should be allotted to candle vendors and other shops selling religious items,” Shelar said.

Another delegation led by Congress corporators Kavita Rodricks and Asif Zakaria, also made similar demands.
