A two-year-old girl was killed and her seven-year-old brother was seriously injured after they were crushed by a school bus at Nerul on Friday. The incident took place around noon, police said.
Ameena Shaikh, and her brother, Abdullah, were on their way to a medical store when the incident took place. “The bus belonging to Ryan International School was picking up students of St Augustine from Sector 23 in Darave village,” said senior inspector RY Galdhar from Nerul police station.
“The kids were leaning on the bus when the vehicle suddenly started to move. They lost their balance and were crushed under its rear wheels.”
Galdhar said the driver of the bus, Raja Fakeer, 28, applied the brakes immediately. However, Ameena succumbed to her injuries and died on the spot, while her brother was taken to a nearby dispensary from where he has was shifted to DY Patil Hospital in Nerul and then to Fortis Hiranandani Hospital in Vashi.
According to a police officer, Abdullah sustained severe head injury and is in a critical situation. “We have arrested the bus driver,” Galdhar said.
Vijay Patil, deputy commissioner of police, traffic, visited the spot after the accident. “It does not seem like a case of rash driving. It is an accident,” Galdhar said.
