Physical fitness of policemen has always been a major concern to the force. On Friday last, Mumbai police chief Arup Patnaik witnessed an embarrassing situation: Four policemen fell unconscious during a 30-minute parade.

The commissioner was livid when he saw that a company with stretchers was also present at the parade site, anticipating that someone might fall during the parade. The commissioner then instructed the pot-bellied policemen to work on their physical fitness, else, they will have to undergo commando training.

According to police sources, after being made the city police chief Patnaik had gone for his first parade at the Naigaum headquarters at Bhoiwada on Friday. Around 400 junior and senior police officers were present there.

“Within the 30-minute parade, at least four policemen participating in it fell unconscious at intervals. A stretcher company was also present at that time during the parade so that the unconscious policemen can be taken for immediate medical treatment,” a senior police officer, who was present at the parade, said on the condition of anonymity.

He added that Patnaik was very angry with this and made a strong remark on the presence of the stretcher company, as it reflected that the policemen were anticipating such things during the parade.

“Patnaik said that it is very disturbing and shocking that four of our men have fallen unconscious in a mere 30-minute parade,” said the officer.

Patnaik then issued an instruction for all heavy weight and pot-belled policemen that they should take care of physical fitness and the positive results should come out soon. If they fail to make themselves fit, they will have to undergo commando-like fitness training as done by the SRPF personnel on a regular basis.

“A policeman should be in a good shape and should be swift enough to face hard situations. Those policemen who are overweight have been asked to improve their physical fitness. Else, they will have to undergo SRPF-like training,” said police chief Arup Patnaik.

Another police official said that policemen are entitled for health allowance of Rs250 per month, but very few of them come forward to claim this allowance as most of them are not physically fit and hence cannot claim this allowance.
