“I want to put up a creative commemorative piece in the new German Bakery for those who became victims of the blast that changed Pune forever,” said Snehal Kharose, the elder daughter of the restaurant’s owner Smita Kharose.

Seventeen people were killed and 60 injured in the German Bakery terror blast at Koregaon Park on February 13, which also severely damaged the popular eatery.

The 20 year old does not want a professional to create this memento, but instead plans to make it herself along with her close friends to give it a personal touch.

“I’m still not sure what it would be. Leopold has preserved the gunshots through its windowpanes for the emotional as well as angry memories attached to that dreadful terrorist attack,” she pointed out.

The third year Arts student and architect Pramod Purohit are reworking the interiors of bakery, which is scheduled open by October.

“I had promised everyone that we’d be functioning by August 15, but could not keep it as procuring funds along with the legal paperwork delayed the process. But work is now on at a good pace for the two-level eatery,” she said.

The budget for the renovation is around Rs40 lakh.

Though old and regular customers said they would like the new German Bakery to look like the way it was, Kharose will upgrade the place to make it more ‘in’ with the times, while retaining the signature laid-back environment. Wooden benches, chairs and the original menu will be wed to a refreshing look and new healthy dishes.

Kharose and the bakery chef have been mulling the new dishes to be added to the famous GB menu as they will have a bigger kitchen.

“I want it [the new do] to be a surprise for my customers and can’t wait to see the look on their faces when they come back for the first time after the blast,” she said.
