While there has been a fall in HIV+ cases in all high-risk categories, two groups have shown a steady rise for the last three years — men having sex with men and intravenous drug users groups.

The authorities blame the rise in numbers to the ineffectiveness of the NGOs that work with these two high-risk groups.

In the men having sex with men category, 9.2% HIV+ cases were registered in 2008-09, 8.6% in 2007-08 and 6% in 2006-07.
In the intravenous drug users’ category, 20% tested positive for HIV in 2008-09, 24% in 2007-08 and 12% in 2005.

DR SS Kudalkar, project director of the Mumbai District Aids Control Society, said: “Though, there was a rise in cases until 2009, there seems to have been a dip in the number of people tested positive for HIV in these two categories after 2009. But, we are still awaiting the latest figures on the same to confirm the fact.”
