Brian and Alan, a gay couple from the US, were blessed with twins through surrogacy. While many gay couples keep coming to India for surrogacy, this is the first instance where a speech and hearing impaired gay couple have realised their dream of children and a family through surrogacy.

“Alan and Brian approached our clinic in August 2010,” said Dr Gautam Allahbadia, medical director, rotunda Blue Fertility Clinic. Alan and Brian were referred to Mumbai by their friends.

“We created embryos using the sperms of Alan and the eggs from an anonymous ethnic Indian egg donor, which were then subsequently transferred into our gestational surrogate. Last month she gave birth to twins, a girl and a boy,” said Dr Allahbadia.

“For a long time we tried to adopt a baby but the adoption agency told us that there was a very slim chance for us, as most parents want to send their child to a normal family. We are mute and dumb apart from being a gay couple,” explained Alan.

According to doctors, more Americans are travelling to India for surrogacy. Dr Allahbadia said, “In the US, surrogacy costs up to $ 120,000 while in India it costs Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. Unlike other countries that consider surrogates legal mothers, India recognises the intended parents as legal parents,” said Dr Allahbadia.

“We’ve named our babies Sela and Seth,” said Alan. The couple run a sign language school in the US and plan to teach their children all they know. “The babies will learn sign language from us, but we will be teaching them to talk with the help of computer software,” said Brian.
