A year on, the pile of garbage outside Konark Puram Society on Kondhwa Road continues to plague the residents and commuters of the area.

Despite repeated complaints from the residents of the society, civic authorities have not yet found an alternative site for dumping the garbage.

“This particular stretch of the road remains busy throughout the day. One cannot use such a busy road for dumping garbage. There are innumerable societies, shops and restaurants on this road. It creates such an unhygienic atmosphere,” Aarti Saxena, a resident of Konark Puram told DNA.

The residents said that nearly half-a-dozen complaints had been made to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) about the problem. But, the problem has only aggravated after the
complaints.

“We have repeatedly complained to the authorities about the menace. Initially, there was only one garbage bin outside the society. Now, it has increased to three. People from all over Kondhwa, Mittanagar and adjoining areas dump garbage outside our society,” said Milan Nikhil, chairman of Konark Puram Society.

The problem is more alarming, as there are other societies and restaurants on both sides of the road. This adds to the nuisance considering the dense population in the area.

Kailas Chowdhary, owner of New Naaz, a restaurant in the area, said, “Customers avoid coming to the restaurants in this area because of the garbage dumped on the opposite side of the road. This has affected our business badly,” he said. However, Bibvewadi ward officer Madhav Deshpande said that the
authorities are aware of the problem and are looking for an alternative site for dumping the garbage.

“We know that the situation has irked the people living and travelling in the area. We have been scouting for an alternative site for quite sometime. We will resolve the issue in the next couple of weeks,” he said.

Meanwhile, local corporator Tanaji Lonkar assured the residents that the garbage dumped in the area will be cleaned on a regular basis till the PMC decides on an alternative site.

“Besides, the ghanta gadi services have been re-started. This will help resolve the problem in near future,” Lonkar said.
