Pune traffic police recently carried out a special survey to locate illegal and unwanted punctures and identified 38 such punctures at various locations in road dividers in the city which are largely responsible for the rise in road mishaps, leading to deaths of commuters and motorists.

The survey was conducted on Pune-Ahmednagar Road, Aundh Road, Karve Road, Solapur Road, Pune-Satara Road, Senapati Bapat Road, Airport Road, VIP Road (Koregaon Park to Circuit House), Sinhagad Road, Bibvewadi Road, Kondhwa Road and old Mumbai-Pune Road.

Interestingly, the traffic police had undertaken a similar exercise a few months ago where it had identified illegal and unwanted punctures on BT Kawade Road (15) and Katraj-Dehu Road bypass (20).

“Like the earlier findings of the survey, this time too  the findings have been sent to the civic body asking it to close these unwanted and illegal punctures. It is necessary to prevent road mishaps. But so far, the PMC has not responded," said the traffic inspector (administration), Vijay Kumar Palsule. The report after the recent survey was prepared by deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Vishwas Pandhare.

Palsule said in the recently concluded survey, the police teams have found that on some roads, the road dividers have been deliberately broken so the commuters could reach, petrol pumps, shops or hotels.

“These illegal and unwanted punctures are one of the reasons of road mishaps and traffic snarls in the city. We will follow up these issues with the civic authority until these dividers are closed," he said.

According to traffic police officials, the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass witnesses at least one accident a day owing to illegal punctures. Any vehicle which crosses the road from the illegal punctures instantly comes in front of the speeding vehicle and meets with an accident.
