ShareGangster Sachin Khambe, who allegedly had a role in the murder attempt on film-maker Rakesh Roshan in 2000, is currently lodged in a jail in Bangalore. But twice in succession, his name has cropped up in crimes committed in the city.
Recently the police arrested some hoodlums for shoting at a Santacruz hotelier. The goons said that Khambe had ordered them to kill the hotelier. Later, on Friday, Vakola police arrested Surekha Manohar Khambe, the mother of the jailed gangster, on charges of trying to extort Rs25,000 from a landlord in Kalina.
Surekha, a resident of Jamblipada in Kalina, approached the landlord early last week and demanded Rs25,000. Inspector Sanjay Patil, of Vakola police station, said,"When the landlord refused to pay her the money, she threatened him. She called up a number on her mobile and gave the phone to the complainant. The receiver of the call identified himself as Sachin Khambe and threatened the landlord with dire consequences unless he paid the money Surekha had demanded. The landlord approached the police. We laid a trap and arrested Surekha when he was to hand her over the money."
Investigations revealed that Khambe had issued extortion threats from jail to quite a few people. The money had been collected by his mother on his behalf, said another police source. "We have arrested Surekha and she has been remanded in police custody till November 4," Patil said.
Crime branch wants Khambe Sachin Khambe, who started his crime career in l999, worked with the Ali Gudesh and Subhash Singh Thakur gang. He was involved in murder and extortion cases, apart from the murder attempt on Rakesh Roshan. He is now jailed in Bangalore after being convicted for the abduction of a businessman.
