During the independence struggle, a frail, bespectacled man, draped in an elegant, white dhoti, shook the British empire with two powerful weapons — truth and non-violence. Today, as the nation remembers Mohandas Karam-chand Gandhi on his 141st birth anniversary, an advertising agency has created a special font in Bapu’s name to bring alive his visionary thoughts.

Leo Burnett (Mumbai) has created a unique ‘Gandhiji font’ in the Devanagari script. Bapu’s spectacles have been incorporated in the font in an effort to remind people of his vision, literally “allowing us to see the world through his eyes”.

Designed by Payal Juthani and Nadine Pereira, the font can be downloaded from www.gandhijifont. com from today. The font will also be promoted on social networking and microblogging sites like Facebook and Twitter where people can download it and share it with others. An English version of the font will be available soon.

Users can also create their own Gandhi quotations and proverbs on downloading the font.

The agency also plans to develop fonts which are representative of other props associated with the Mahatma.

“The creation of these fonts is our way of celebrating the life and teachings of the Mahatma,” said KV Sridhar, national creative director at Leo Burnett. “The values of truth and non-violence imparted by Mahatma Gandhi decades ago are more important today than ever before, hence it only seemed apt to create something like this.”

The font has been designed keeping in mind the advertising agency’s ‘Humankind’ approach, which believes that creativity has the power to transform human behaviour. Also, with the Internet revolution slowly spreading its wings across the country, Leo Burnett believes it has the ability to reach out and touch the lives of billions of people across India and around the world.

While the font is merely a symbolic representation of Gandhi, the website will also look at why it is important to remember Bapu and incorporate his teachings to improve one’s life.
