Gates of the charity commissioner’s office were closed for nearly one and a half hour on Wednesday morning, due to a Gandhi style protest staged by the members of Deshbhakti Andolan, against alleged corruption in the office.

Roses were presented to the officials who were supposed to have dealt with the relevant file and they were requested to help find the file.

The charity commissioner’s office did not respond to an RTI query regarding the balance sheets and other financial details of the Rustom Kerawalla Trust that runs the Vibgyor school in Goregaon.

Avisha Kulkarni, whose daughter was expelled from this school last year for protesting the fee hike, had filed an RTI on November 23. But even after two months, she has still not received the documents requested under the RTI. After persistent visits, the charity commissioner’s office said that the requested file was ‘untraceable’.

“As per the rules of the charity commissioner’s office, all files are required to be maintained for up to 12 years and the files we sought were only two years old. A senior official, who is also the appeal authority under RTI, directed the staff to trace the file but the file remains elusive,” said Kulkarni. After the protest, SK Chaure, charity commissioner, held a meeting with them. “We will trace the file within two days,” he said.

However, Kulkarni suspects foul play. “It is strange that this file which contained the financial dealings of the school should be missing,” she added. She wanted the file as it was one of the deciding factors in the case.

She said that in 2008 she had filed a complaint with the charity commissioner’s office against alleged misappropriation of funds by the school trust. Following her complaint an inquiry was held but Kulkarni complained that she was not called for the inquiry. On the basis of the inquiry, the commissioner’s office had given Rustom Kerawalla foundation a clean chit. “We have already proved the matter in court and have nothing to discuss,” Kerawalla said.
