In the wake of Delhi gang rape case, scientists from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), India’s nuclear research centre, have developed an electronic device to send a pre-set SMS to any five phone numbers in case of any crisis or medical emergency. All this, on the click of a button.

The device needs to be paired with the mobile phone of the user with the help of software. In case of any medical emergency or other crisis, the user can press the button on the device. It will send a signal via Bluetooth to the paired cell phone along with the GPS (longitude and latitude) location.

This signal will prompt the software loaded on the cell phone to send a pre-formatted SMS to any five cell phone numbers stored on the device. It could be of parents, the police, relatives or friends. Once the switch is pressed, the device continues to send its GPS location to the paired cell phone every 10 minutes.

The cell phone would in turn send an SMS to the same five numbers stored in the device. This will help investigating agencies or people receiving messages to locate the person.

The small device weighing about 100 gm is expected to cost less that Rs1,000. It comes with a chargeable battery and has an LED device to indicate low battery. The BARC officials would upload the know-how, design and other technical details of the device on their website so that any interested company could start production.
