The project for improving rural road connectivity in Maharashtra under the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) has come to a standstill for want of funds. Inaugurated in 2000, the PMGSY was meant for improving connectivity in rural parts of the country by laying roads connecting villages to tehshils in districts.

The funds for this project are released by the central government, while the implementation is done by the state government. DY Patil, superintending engineer for Pune region, admitted that the work has stopped due to the Union government not sanctioning funds for various projects in the last two years.

The work of laying roads is done in phases. The phase X of the project is in limbo at present. “We had submitted a budget of Rs6,000 crore to the central government, but none of the projects have been sanctioned till now,” he said.

Under the PMGSY, projects of connectivity are given priority and projects of upgradation are given second priority. In the last 10 years, Maharashtra has managed to achieve 100% connectivity for its villages and so the funds are being diverted to north-eastern parts of the country, Patil claimed.

Phase X of the project had listed upgradation of various roads and construction of missing bridges in various parts of the state.
Officers in the department pointed out how, in absence of upgradation, many roads laid might be reduced to rubble in the ensuing monsoon.

A total of 3,617 km of roads have been laid till date under this scheme and the total budget sanctioned till date was Rs1,089 crore.
