As her children Aditi and Aarav participated in a discussion about easy banking and how to care for currency notes at a Reserve Bank of India stall, Neha Khanna let her hair down and indulged in a pedicure where little fish nibbled away on the dead skin on her feet.

“It’s a great experience, once you get past the ticklish sensation,” said Khanna who had brought her kids to the Aqua Station, a three-day funfair organised by DNA Ya! at the NSE Grounds, Goregaon (East).

On the opening day of the event on Friday, hundreds of children with parents in tow made the most of the hot and humid summer afternoon.

As the kids went from stall to stall looking curiously at what was on offer on the air-conditioned premises, the adults indulged in pedicures or sat around discussing the theme of the fair — Aqua.

“This is a great way to get kids interested in marine life,” said another parent Satish Vatsal, pointing to the huge tanks holding rare species of fish at the entrance. The family not only jotted down the names and characteristics of the fish but also participated in the games around the theme.

The craft workshops where the participants were taught to make pottery, shell-photo frames, aquariums, fridge magnets and keychains were also a big draw. There were food stations put up by Sunfeast that served hot noodles to the participants. “Food, games and a cool haircut — all of this at the same venue is so much fun,” said Ameya Raj, 9, who got his hair cut and spiked at a stall put up by a salon.

Volunteers of Pratham, an NGO working in the field of primary education, had put up a science zone where children were encouraged to explore and apply scientific knowledge such as the formation of water bubbles and whirlpools, and the generation of hydroelectric power.

“This is a good approach that one can learn properly only after seeing or doing a scientific phenomenon practically,” said mother-of-two Rajani Shetty.

However, the highlight was the live performance by the young singers of the Zee Little Champs. “It is for the first time that the young crooners are singing live,” said an organiser.
Entry is free. The event will be on till Sunday between 10.30am and 7.30pm.
