The Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat (KKPKP), on Monday, distributed scholarships to 290 children of ragpickers so that they can continue with their studies.
The NGO wants the children of ragpickers to complete their studies, earn livelihood and lead decent lives. This is the fifth year that KKPKP has given away scholarships to the students. This initiative is supported by Tech Mahindra.
In the last four years, about 927 children of ragpickers have benefited from this initiative. The scholarships were given away by Baba Adhav, president of Hamal Panchayat, in the presence of Mohan Nanavre, president of KKPKP; Vijay Wavare, project manager of Tech Mahindra and Sopanrao Chavan, treasurer, KKPKP Urban Credit Cooperative.
The scholarships were given to meritorious students studying in standard I to postgraduation. Vrushali, daughter of a KKPKP member Udhhav Kamble, who is pursuing her graduation, is thrilled by being awarded the scholarship. She aims to succeed in the civil services examination. “I would not have been standing here today if it wasn’t for the continuous support and encouragement that I received from my parents and KKPKP. If I clear the UPSC exams, I want to ensure that I continue the fight for the rights and dignity of ragpickers through my work,” she said.
Despite undergoing hardships and earning her way through college by washing utensils and babysitting, Vrushali is determined to reach her goal in life.
While addressing the gathering, Adhav acknowledged the role that the union was playing in ensuring that children of ragpickers are educated and have a secure future.
While referring to rising prices, he said, “The struggle and fight is far from over, we have a long way to go.”
As part of its education programme for children of ragpickers, the KKPKP conducted IQ and aptitude tests, theatre workshops, driving lessons for girls, as well as a beautician’s course.
The union also distributed notebooks, gave educational loans and campaigned with the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for the rights of the children of ragpickers.
