In the world of social networking, frenemies are what you should watch out most for. A 22-year-old girl from Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri (W) learnt this the hard way, when she found that her Facebook account had been allegedly hacked into and a vulgar comment posted on her profile.

The police investigated the matter and found the alleged culprit was a close friend, who stays in the same building as her. The suspect, Saurabh  Singhal, 22, was arrested by officers from the cyber crime police station (CCPS) at Bandra-Kurla Complex.

The victim (name withheld) had the same username and password for her Gmail and Facebook accounts. The two were aware of each other passwords. However, after a tiff on April 13, Singhal decided to seek revenge. He told the victim that someone had posted a vulgar comment on her Facebook account. “The victim’s FB and Gmail accounts had been hacked into. Two days later, the victim told Singhal that she would register a police case,” said a police source.

Singhal convinced her otherwise, saying that his friend is a hacker and will help. A few days later, he phoned the victim and asked her to log into Facebook and Gmail.

“It worked but the girl was suspicious, and lodged a complaint with the CCPS in May,” said the officer.

“When we investigated the case, it was revealed that the IP address of the computer from which the comment was posted was at Singhal’s residence. We then seized the hard disk and arrested Singhal on July 12,” said the officer.

Singhal was produced in Esplanade court in Azad Maidan and released on bail.
