The long-awaited north carriageway of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) is almost ready for use. The news will bring cheer to thousands of motorists who squeeze themselves into BWSL’s current four lanes.
Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) — contractor for the 4.7 km-long sea link has almost finished construction of the north carriageway which will carry passengers from Worli-end to
Bandra.
According to sources in the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which owns the bridge, the north carriageway should be ready by the end of the month. The south-bound four lanes of the Rs1,634-crore sea link were opened in July last year.
The financially stressed MSRDC was expecting tremendous response from motorists, but the past eight months have seen the bridge being utilised only up to 40 per cent of its total capacity. However, MSRDC chairman and minister for public works (public undertakings) Jaydatt Kshirsagar had said during the winter session that the bridge would see more motorists once the north carriageway was opened.
A senior MSRDC official told DNA that final touches were being given to the north-bound four lanes of the bridge.
While MSRDC will take a final call on the exact date for the opening, HCC is sure there will be no grand function this time.
