Former chief ministers from the Congress Vilasrao Deshmukh, Narayan Rane, Sushilkumar Shinde and Ashok Chavan have registered an outstanding performance in the local bodies’ elections in their turf.

CM Prithviraj Chavan failed to give the Congress a lead in his home district Satara. The post-poll analysis reports being dispatched to the AICC is a pointer to the functioning within the organisation. The party had allowed a three-member team — the CM, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Manikrao Thakre and Mumbai Regional Congress Committee chief Kripashankar Singh to dominate poll strategies and selection of candidates.

A section of the state Congress has sought the ouster of AICC secretary Mohan Prakash, in charge of Maharashtra. “After the Uttar Pradesh elections, we will demand changes in the organisation. The high command cannot overlook the factor that Maharashtra requires a leader of higher status who is well versed with the complex politics,” said a senior Congress leader, on condition of anonymity.

The total seats contested in Satara zilla parishad were 67. The NCP bagged 39 seats and the Congress 21. The Union minister for science and technology Vilasrao Deshmukh gave the Congress absolute majority winning 35 seats out of the total 58 seats in Latur zilla parishad.

The NCP managed to win only nine seats, Sena five and BJP eight seats. Deshmukh focused on district politics as central leadership did not involve him in planning the strategy for BMC and local bodies’ elections.

Former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan was sidelined and so he confined himself to his turf, Nanded, where the Congress bagged 25 seats out of 63 seats in zilla parishad elections.

Industries Minister Narayan Rane succeeded to retain Congress’s hold in Sindhudurg by winning 33 seats out of 50 seats. The NCP, which had deployed the services of top leadership to tarnish Rane’s image, got 10 seats. The BJP won 3 seats and Sena 4 seats. Union minister for power Sushilkumar Shinde who was challenged by NCP president Sharad Pawar in the Solapur municipal elections ensured that the Congress won 45 seats out of 102. The NCP won 16, Sena eight and BJP 25 seats.
