Food poisoning of students: Report unclear about cause

It is still not clear what caused food poisoning of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay students.

The pathology reports are out but are not conclusive. The officials have decided to take expert medical assistance to know the cause of the food poisoning.

Around 600 IIT students were taken ill after having dinner at the hostel mess on Sunday night.
Questionnaires are being sent to students residing in hostel numbers 12, 13 and 14.

The questions that it includes are aiming at solving the confusions on the food poisoning case and non-conclusive reports.

While Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) reports are still awaited, the IITB has started working to find the cause of the incident after the pathology report by the campus hospital was out on Thursday.

The report that mentions of two kinds of bacteria found in the stool of the affected students, does not lead to any conclusion on the cause of food poisoning. The mentioned bacteria are generally found in the human body to a certain level and one of it does not have records of leading to food poisoning symptoms in human body.

According to an official, students have approached the authorities saying they suffered food poisoning without eating the Chinese food served for dinner. "Also many of the students have showed symptoms after 24 hours of eating the Sunday dinner. So we are also trying to know what all had for lunch," said the official.
Three students are still in hospital, said officials.
