A group of boys from Mulund, who had to be rushed to MT Agarwal Hospital, Mulund (West) on Sunday evening, would do well to always keep in mind the age-old advice: Never accept anything from a stranger.

For it was after eating pomegranates offered to them by a stranger on Sunday evening that all of them started complaining of vomitting and drowsiness.

The boys from ACC Road in Mulund (West) were playing cricket at a nearby open ground when the incident occurred. “We were playing cricket as usual on Sunday when a stranger selling fruit on a handcart came by and offered me a pomegranate. Several more boys from the group followed me,” said Rohan Ravindra Tapase, 9, adding that the man did not charge them for the fruit.

“The boys were under observation and are out of danger. They will be discharged soon,” informed Dr Vinayak Shinde, chief medical officer of the hospital. “This is the first time that so many people have been admitted here due to food poisoning. This should serve as a lesson for children. They should avoid accepting anything from a stranger,” added the doctor.

Meanwhile, a Teachers’ Day party turned nightmarish for 35 students from a coaching class at Ramabai Nagar, Ghatkopar, who started vomitting after consuming goodies served to them at the party.

The students, all between 8 and 14 years of age, had consumed chips and pastries at the party organised at the Ramai School by a teacher, Rajesh Anand, who runs USA coaching classes in the area. Fifteen minutes later, the students as well as the teacher complained of dizziness and vomitting, and were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar.

“Rajaram Chaudhary, 50, the shop owner, and Shamsun Ansari, 38, the owner of the bakery which supplied the pastries, have been booked for adulteration and sale of noxious food, and endangering life,” said a senior police officer from Pant Nagar police station, where the case was reported.

The students are said to be in a stable condition and have been discharged.
