The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has seized about 30,000 cans of Dragonfly, an energy drink, whose expiry dates had been tampered with, and the caffeine content in them exceeded the permissible limits.

FDA joint commissioner Suhas Chaudhari said 29,910 Dragonfly cans manufactured in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were seized.

“Assistant commissioner Kishor Gore along with food inspectors AE Kerure and CD Rathod raided the godown of Universal India Company in Bombay Port Trust area and seized the cans worth Rs21 lakh. It was found that one Ali Asgar Gandhi was tampering with the expiry dates of the cans,” Chaudhari said, adding that Kamjig Exim Pvt Ltd, an Andheri-based company, is the importer of the drink.

Gandhi, who was arrested, told the officers that the importer bought cans for Rs10 each though the maximum retail price printed on the product is Rs70.
