In spite of the loss of life and property after the 26/11 attacks and the 13/7 blasts, the multi-crore project of the state government to install 6000 CCTV cameras across the city is moving at a snail’s pace.

Tired of false promises, the traders working in South-Mumbai especially in VP Road, MJ Market, Zaveri Bazaar, Bhuleshwar and Pydhonie areas have now taken up the responsibility themselves to maintain security and thereby help the police, too. In a joint project with the city police, several markets and associations have installed CCTV cameras in their markets, which are also viewed by the police.

According to deputy commissioner of police, Zone II, Anil Kumbhare, the major problem in these areas is the high density of population. “Since these market areas are quite crowded, it is impossible to keep a tab on all people or vehicles plying in these areas. In a drive to ensure safety, locals have also been roped in. The feeds of CCTV installed by these associations can be viewed by the traders and police,” Kumbhare said.

Following the 13/7 blasts, he added, the traders had themselves installed CCTV cameras in different markets and areas by shelling out money from their own pocket. “Fifty cameras have been installed in Pydhonie and strategically posted in Minara Masjid and at the back of Mumbadevi and Mandvi junction. Four points of these cameras have been taken on internet by the police and can also be viewed from home. Forty-eight cameras have been installed in MJ Market, which is spread over seven acres, comprising over 1500 shops. All entry-exit points have been manned with cameras,” said Kumbhare.

Around 25 cameras have been installed at Bhuleshwar, the hub of imitation jewellery market. Sixteen cameras by metal businessmen have been installed in VP Road area. “We have appealed to the traders of automobile association in DB Marg, to install cameras in their area,” Kumbhare said.
