The Mumbai Marathon always has casualties and this year was no exception. While the medical personnel treated 3,500 to 4,000 participants on Sunday, only five had to be taken to the hospital.

“Most participants suffered from exhaustion, dehydration, muscle cramps, sprains, vomiting bouts and nipple burns,” said Dr Vijay D’Silva, medical director of Asian Heart Institute, which has been in-charge of the Mumbai Marathon for the last nine years.
The organisers were prepared for the inevitable casualties along with 350 medical personnel from the Asian Heart Institute.  “We had two base camps at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and at Metro Cinema. There were 10 ambulances and six people on motor bikes. We have treated 3,500 to 4000 participants,” said Dr D’Silva, sitting in the CST medical camp.
A 22-year-old man suffering from severe dehydration, a 50- year-old-woman who took a tumble and cut her lip and a foreigner who collapsed due to low sugar and dehydration were admitted at Bombay hospital, said Dr RK Choudhary, medical superintendent of the hospital.
Dr D’Silva said one runner suffered a suspected ligament tear and another complained of chest pain,  and were taken to Jaslok and Lilavati hospitals.
“Participants need to go through proper supervised training. If you train under supervision, you know how to keep yourself hydrated and do proper warm-up and cool-down to avoid all these problems,” he added. “We had 91 of our former heart patients from Asian Heart Institute running here. They were all trained properly, not one of them needed any medical attention.”
