First international IT institute in Maharashtra

After the nod by the central government, the state now will have the International Institution of Information and Technology (IIIT), the first of its kind in the country, which will help the state impart higher standard of the information technology education. The institution will be made with a budget of Rs135 crore, of which the government of India is chipping in Rs45 crore.

Higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope announced the global institute in the state assembly on Saturday. He said that the institute, which will come up with help of private players, is planned on public-private partnership model. The minister said that the Private University Bill, which is expected to be passed in the ongoing budget session, will help the government impart competitive global-standard education.

The minister said that the decision about the bifurcation of universities will be taken by the government in next few months as the committee appointed for the same is expected to submit its report by the end of the month. “Some of the universities in the state have more than 900 colleges affiliated to them, against the earmarked limit of 150 colleges by the National Knowledge Centre. The decision will be taken in the next few months,” he said.

The minister also announced seven model colleges in the state to increase the percentage of the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER). Tope said that the percentage of GER in the state is among the best, at 20%. He said that the aim was to ramp it up to 60% to take it on par with the rate of the developed countries. Each model college will cost Rs8 crore, of which Rs2.66 crore would be shared by the central government.

Tope also announced five study circles for the preparation of pre-IAS studies for students appearing for UPSC exams.
Announcing 10 new girls hostels, the minister said that the seats for girls in Mumbai will be increased by a large number. He said that the open plots near Sydenham and Chetana colleges in the city will be used for the new hostels.
