More than a year after a fireman succumbed to injuries while dousing fire at Goyal Shopping Centre in Borivli, the fire department is yet to submit a detail report on the mishap. Members of the standing committee on Monday pointed guns at the laxity of the fire department for the unduly delay.

On February 18, a major fire had broken out in the Goyal Shopping Centre. Prakash Zagade, 45, an assistant fire officer with the Byculla fire brigade unit, died during the rescue operations. Two fire officers were injured too. The fire revealed that the shopping centre’s basement had also violated several DCR rules.

Corporators demanded that the department should explain the reason behind the delay and should file the report at the earliest. “How shameful it is that the fire department is yet to ascertain reason behind death of a fireman? The department’s lack of apathy in investigating the cause of the fireman’s death is unjustified,” said Sameer Desai, congress corporator.

Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had confirmed after the mishap that Zagade died of inhaling thick smoke as he was not equipped with proper breathing apparatus. “The truth will be buried inside due to inefficiency of the civic administration to submit the report. The wife of the deceased is physically unfit and is unaware of her husband’s death,” said Yashwant Jadhav, a Shiv Sena corporator.

Fire official stated that the department is inquiring the matter and will soon present its report. Soothing the irked corporator, additional municipal commissioner, Mohan Adtani assured that the report will be submitted within 15 days. “Along with malls and buildings, we will also carry out inspection at private coaching classes that have come up in small spaces in the city. We will make sure that these places are following the required fire safety norms,” said Adtani.
