Final hurdle for Metro in Mumbai cleared

There is some good news for Mumbaikars. The final hurdle for the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro line has been cleared.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said that in case the hurdle at Asalpha was not resolved, the project was likely to be commissioned in phases from Versova till Asalpha station.

MMRDA commissioner Rahul Asthana confirmed that the right of way (ROW) issues at Maheshwar temple in Asalpha had been resolved. The roof of the structure was coming in way of the staircase.

Officials said the basic groundwork on the staircase had started on Tuesday. A source said with this issue and that of a minaret of a mosque near Andheri station having been resolved, complete ROW for the project was in place.

The Rs2,356 crore, 11.40km- long project is being executed by the Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) set up by the MMRDA, Reliance Infrastructure and Veolia Transport, France.

It will have 12 elevated stations. The MMRDA said the work on the project was likely to be completed by June- July 2013.
