Years of fighting a bitter matrimonial battle have taken a toll on film producer Gaurang Doshi, who on Friday informed the Bombay high court that he is willing to pay Rs2.5 crore as alimony.

Doshi gave his consent before a division bench comprising justice PB Majmudar and justice Anoop Mohta, which was hearing a petition filed by his estranged wife, Madhuri, seeking an increase in the monthly maintenance granted to her by a family court.

Doshi and Madhuri, however, could not arrive at a consensus on the settlement. The issue is likely to be decided on June 19.

On a query posed by the bench, Doshi said he was willing to pay Madhuri Rs2.5 crore as permanent alimony in case they could agree upon an amicable settlement.

Advocate Satish Maneshinde, who was representing Madhuri, told the court that she wanted Rs2.75 crore. After a subsequent discussion with her, he said she was willing to accept Rs2.5 crore if Doshi could make the payment immediately.

The producer, however, expressed his inability to do so, saying he has fallen on hard times. He added that he had some debts to repay since his last film that came out in 2004 did not perform well at the box-office. The judges expressed their surprise at Doshi’s poor financial condition.

On Madhuri’s demand for such a huge alimony despite Doshi’s poor financial status, the bench said, “Once a woman is accustomed to a particular lifestyle, then it is difficult for her to change.”

Madhuri had approached the family court in 2006 seeking a monthly maintenance of Rs2 lakh for herself and Rs75,000 for her daughter, Ghena. She approached the HC after the family court on June 16, 2010, granted her and the child a monthly maintenance of Rs50,000 each.

Apart from seeking an enhancement in the monthly maintenance for herself and her daughter, Madhuri has also challenged the rejection of her claim for provision of accommodation and a car by the family court.
