Your name could be featured alongside these icons in the country’s first film museum, which is being planned at Peddar Road.

The Films Division and the ministry of information and broadcasting have initiated work on setting up the National Museum of Indian Cinema.

To increase the interactive element, the ministry has invited film enthusiasts and cinema lovers to donate manuscripts, rare photographs, phonographs, movies, artifacts, and other memorabilia.

V Packirisamy, director, Films Division, said film-makers, producers, and all those connected to Indian cinema have been invited to donate items which could be used as exhibits at the museum. Those interested have been asked to send details of the items for donation to the office of the director general of Films Division.

Packirisamy said a committee will scrutinise the entries before deciding the ones that will be a displayed at the museum.
The ministry, which will be spending Rs116 crore towards the setting up of the museum, plans to open the museum in 2013 to mark the centenary of Raja Harishchandra, the silent film directed and produced by, Dadasaheb Phalke, in 1913.

“The museum will be in two parts. The first one will be located in a building, Gulshan Mahal, situated inside the campus. A new four-storey building will be constructed to house the second portion of the museum,” Packirisamy said, adding that the new building will also house theatres.

“An existing studio will be converted into a demo studio. An amphitheatre will be constructed inside the museum,” he said.
The construction work is being carried out by the National Building Construction Corporation Ltd. The ministry has tied up with National Council of Science Museums for display of artifacts.

Packirisamy said they were seeking suggestions from representatives of similar museums in London and New York.
