The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned the sale of Solufer XT tablets, which are used as iron supplements mainly by patients of anaemia, in Pune.

FDA’s assistant commissioner Ravi Joshi told DNA that the orders were issued after tests of the samples of the tablets showed that it contained free metallic iron particles, which is harmful for health.

“6,128 strips of Solufer XT tablets totally valued at Rs4,47,284 is prohibited for sale in Pune. Samples of four batches have been drawn for testing. Chemists have been informed to return the stock,” said Joshi.

This is not the first time that such an action is being taken; these tablets were banned for sale in Maharashtra by FDA commissioner last month after inspectors found that the iron content was so high that the tablets got attracted to magnets when brought near it.

When iron content is more than the permissible limits, it could lead to health hazards.
