Corruption crusader Anna Hazare made a call to all Mumbaikars through a conference on Monday at the Marathi Patrakar Sangh. The activist who is in the city to create awareness and gather support for the Jan Lokpal Bill asked people of the city to observe a day’s fast on April 5 and support the movement.

Hazare was speaking at a gathering organised by the India Against Corruption that is gaining support throughout the country for the cause. “There is no tough law for ending corruption and if we want to save this country we need a Jan Lokpal Bill. The only reason the government wants to bring this bill is because they fear losing power. We should not let that happen because the other party coming to power will be equally bad. It is therefore necessary that the demand is made strongly from the public and whoever is there should understand that. Consider this to be fight against corruption and be part of it and join us in fasting,” said Hazare. The Jan Lokpal Bill, drafted by the activist seeks to make the body independent and gives more teeth for prosecution compared to the governmet’s “milder version”.

“As per their draft, they will be mere appointees. Our draft makes it an open process with committee being of Bharat Ratna’s chairperson of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, judges etc. We want a bill that makes it independent so that a citizen’s complain can investigate a person of any rank,” said Arvind Kejriwal, RTI activist. “It is about time we do something to end corruption in this country if we have to save it,” said archbishop of Bombay, cardinal Oswald Gracias.

A rally for the same is being organised by Hazare at the Nare Park, Parel on April 3 instead of March 30 citing the India-Pakistan match.

“We will have a rally and then  Hazare will be leaving for Delhi where he will fast till April 11. Then we will start the jail bharo andolan,” said activist Mayank Gandhi.

The event was attended by representatives of Art of Living, Baba Ramdev, Medha Patkar's National Alliance for People's Movement and All India Banks Employees.
