Days after being arrested by the Pune police for allegedly cultivating poppy, the farmers are now blaming their wives for it.
Satish Korekar and Dattatreya Chavan of Nharve and Vadagaon Rasai villages respectively in Shirur taluka of Pune were arrested by the Pune rural police earlier this week after poppy plants were found on their fields.

Police inspector Ashok Kshirsagar told DNA that both farmers claimed being innocent of willful cultivation of opium poppy. He said, “During interrogation, they claimed the portion of the field where the crop was found was part of the kitchen garden maintained by their wives.”

He added that the farmers claimed their wives had planted the poppy to reap khas khas for their kitchen. “Khas khas is an essential ingredient for the Diwali delicacy of Anarsa. The farmers claimed their wives had cultivated the plants to get khas khas,” he added.

Kshirsagar was not able to get to the source of the seeds of poppy and claimed this was the first time such cultivation was done in Pune district.
