Farhan Azmi, the son of MLA Abu Azmi, has approached the police complaining about strange telephone calls that he has been receiving over the past couple of days.

The caller, Azmi said, is stalking him with unusual demands — he wants Rs55 lakh and two AK-47 rifles for some ‘activity’. “I have been getting these calls for the past three weeks,” Azmi said. “The caller identifies himself as Afzal Khan. He claims he is from Pakistan and his family too lives in Pakistan. He said he has been sent to India by his mentors to do some activity.”

On some occasions, the caller said Abu Hamza and Abu Sufiyan sent him to the country. Both Hamza and Sufiyan are Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives wanted in the 26/11 attack.

“The caller said he had lost his money and has no one to contact,” Azmi said. “So, he needs Rs55 lakh, two AK-47 rifles and bullets.” The caller once mentioned Kasab. “He said he is proud of Kasab. I cannot understand why a terrorist will speak with me for 10 to 12 minutes. I don’t want to hide anything; so, I have reported the matter to the crime branch of the Mumbai Police.”

The caller also told Azmi that a huge cache of explosives meant for the activity had already reached the country, 300km from
Bhiwandi.

Azmi said the caller was watching him closely. “He would tell me the location and the places I visited. He might be a psycho. But if he is real, then the police should get hold of him immediately.”
Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police and crime branch chief, said they had received an application from Azmi two days ago about the telephone calls. “No First Information Report has been registered because we are investigating the
matter,” Maria said.

The officer, however, said that the police have traced the telephone call to several PCOs in the state. “Only one person seems to be making the calls to Farhan Azmi. Inquiries are on,” he said.
