Upset over having failed her second-year BCom examination, a 21-year-old college girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the mezzanine floor of her Malwani home in Malad (W). In the incident that took place on Friday afternoon, Anisha D’Souza’s family members were on the ground floor of their Malwani home when she ended her life. The Malwani police have registered a case of accidental death as the victim has not left any suicide note.

A resident of Gaikwad Nagar in sector 8 of Malwani, Anisha lived along with her father Pravin, a driver by profession, her mother, a housewife, and a younger brother, said the Malwani police. “On Thursday, Anisha had gone to her college, Gauridas Mittal College in Malad (West), to collect her exam result. Upon learning that she had failed the exam, she was depressed,” said senior inspector Abdul Rauf Shaikh of the Malwani police.

“On Friday afternoon (around 2.30pm), when the other family members were on the ground floor, Anisha went up to the mezzanine floor and jumped off.  The society children playing in the compound heard a loud thud and informed the family members. She was rushed to the Bhagwati Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival,” added Shaikh.

“While the preliminary probe indicates it to be a case of suicide, we are yet to record the statement of the victim’s family members as they are still in a state of shock. However, they say they do not suspect any foul play,” said Shaikh.
