The students of Class XI, who have failed in Maths and Science, will be given grace marks this year.

Junior Colleges have extended this relief to students of Class XI only for this year as a large number of students were not aware about the new rules regarding the grace mark. However, this relief has not been extended to Class IX students.

There was confusion among students and even colleges about the grace mark rule. “A circular of the state board on grace marks for Class IX and XI had lots of ambiguity. Students and some colleges said they have not received the latest circular about the rule change. Hence, they did not inform their students. So we are extending the old rule this year. Those colleges who have already declared their results according to the new rule will have to revise their results,’’ said JS Saharia, school education secretary.

According to the old rule, Class XI students can be given a maximum of 10 grace marks in three subjects if they were failing the exam. In June 2010, when the new syllabus for Class IX Maths and Science was introduced, the rules were changed. It stated that only those students should score minimum 25% marks in theory papers of Maths and Science will be eligible for grace marks. In 2011 March, the syllabus was changed for physics, chemistry and biology for Class XI and so the same rule was made applicable for Class XI students. On March 8, 2012, the state board issued another circular clarifying this.

In a meeting between the school education minister and state board authorities it was decided that such students would be given the benefit of doubt and even those who have not scored the stipulated marks should be given grace marks. Saharia said, “Next year onwards students and colleges will be expected to follow the new rule and no exceptions will be made then.’’

But a proposal to extend a similar relief to Class IX students was quashed as the state board stated the rule for grace marks of Class IX was changed two years ago and parents were aware about it.  Education minister Rajendra Darda said, “We are shocked that large number of students failing in Class IX. We wanted to provide this relief to Class IX students as well. But we will launch an inquiry on the two schools Antonio DeSouza, Byculla and Sacred Heart High School, Worli.”
