General manager of central railway, Subodh Jain on Tuesday said the central railway authorities are planning to attach additional coaches to trains running between Pune and Mumbai to accommodate more passengers.

Jain inspected the Lonavla-Pune section and the Pune railway station.

He told media persons, “There are five trains running between Pune and Mumbai. There is a lot of rush for these trains, therefore we are planning to attach more coaches to some of these trains to accommodate more passengers. We have started attaching these coaches on an experimental basis for 15 days, after which, we will take the final decision.”

Jain added, “The central railway is planning to terminate some Lonavla-Pune local trains at Shivajinagar station, so that Pune station will be able to accommodate long-distance trains. These local trains will depart to Lonavla from Shivajinagar station only. We also plan to construct a multi-level transport section outside Shivajinagar station where different corridors will be provided for buses, rickshaws and private vehicles.”

“Central railway is planning a survey of Pune-Lonavla section to lay a third line but before that we have requested the ministry to sanction a survey for the route between Shivajinagar railway station and Pune railway station as it is a complex route due to the Sangam bridge,” he said.

When Jain was asked about lack of security arrangements at Pune railway station, he said, “I admit that the metal detectors and the baggage scanner are left unmanned. The scanner was purchased two-and-half years ago. Now the guarantee period of that scanner machine is over and railway authorities are not using the scanner since the last month. The authorities are in talks with the machine provider regarding maintenance of the machine. However, I will instruct them to look into the matter.”
