Knowing the city in and out is not something that would interest the youth, but two city-based organisations have come together to promote the city’s heritage among the young generation.
The Rotaract Club of Pune, Shaniwarwada, and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) have organised a game of treasure hunt on Sunday.

“An event called Discover Pune will be held on February 26 across the city. This is the 8th edition of this event,” said Avinash Bayaskar, president of the Rotaract Club of Pune, Shaniwarwada.
The event is mainly aimed at raising awareness about the neglected heritage sites in the city.

The game involves deciphering cryptographic texts, looking for places shown in pictures, finding them with the help of clues, mapping routes and finally reaching the destinations.

“This unique heritage treasure hunt takes the participants from today’s Pune to old Punavadi, from Rashtrakutas to Peshwas, to British raj to modern icons; encouraging them to find out more about the iconic personalities. The clues include question-answers and puzzles to know more about the place. The game is open to all age groups,” added Bayaskar.

The event has been held successfully for the past seven editions by INTACH & Rotaract Club of Pune Shaniwarwada and this is the 8th edition.

The game’s first edition was held in 2006. More than 120 heritage sites in Pune have already been a part of previous editions that saw a participation of more than 500 people.

INTACH member Sharvey Dhongde said, “Nowadays, listing coffee shops and malls is easier for Puneites than knowing about wadas, peths, ghats and gallis which make the city classic. The event is being held with the intention to make people explore the neglected heritage sites in the city.”

The game will start after all teams arrive at Shaniwarwada. All teams will start from a single starting point and will go around the city looking for 11 historic and heritage sites with the help of clues in form of pictures, texts, code words, cryptic messages, signs and symbols.

Winners will be decided by considering various factors like time and points. Winners will get exciting prizes worth Rs20,000, Barista gift vouchers, trophy and certificates.
