In a move that is certain to make the party stand out, the MNS has decided to rope in professional experts from different areas in a bid to train its newly elected corporators regarding the nuances of civic proceedings and the functioning of the civic body.

Of the fresh batch of corporators, over 80% are new faces. At the same time, most of the senior corporators across all the parties have lost their seats in the recent poll. Of 227 seats in the civic general body, as many as 190 have been elected for the first time.

Barring one or two MNS corporators out of 28, the rest are first-timers. “We want them to go to the BMC armoured with a basic understanding of various committees, and the platforms for raising different issues,” said an MNS official.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, is frontrunner in the training programme. The MNS is the only political party in the city that has selected its candidates through an internal written and oral examination.

MNS leader Nitin Sardesai said, “We already have our panel of experts on different cells for civic issues. Apart from this, we will call in professional experts and senior bureaucrats who will guide the new corporators,” he said.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is one of the richest corporations in the country, with a budget of over Rs21,000 crore.

It has over 50 various departments that function with both, the elected representatives and administrative wing.

“We have a handful of seniors in the new batch of corporators, and it would be our duty to guide them in proper manner. We have decided to train them soon,” said Rajhans Singh, Opposition leader in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

“It is very important for the corporator to know what is going on in a general body meeting or other committee meetings, as the BMC has its own laws and style of functioning,” Singh added.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), partner in the civic ruling party, has also scheduled training for its 31 corporators.
