Former Mumbai police commissioner Khwaja Hasan Gafoor died of a massive heart attack at the Breach Candy hospital here on Monday morning. Gafoor, who was at his Worli residence at the time of the attack, was rushed to the hospital, where he breathed his last.

Gafoor, 62, retired from active service after an illustrious record on December 31, 2010. At the time, he was the senior-most officer in state. Known to be among the most sophisticated police officers of his time, Gafoor was an ace marksman with special interest in guns and was twice felicitated with the President’s medal.

In his 36 years as an IPS officer, Gafoor spent a major part of his career in several executive and non-executive postings, with the most important posting being that of Mumbai police chief. It was during his tenure that the audacious 26/11 terror attacks took place in the city. In fact, the Ram Pradhan committee, constituted to look into what went wrong during the 26/11 terror attacks, had questioned Gafoor’s functioning as the police chief during the attacks. After the committee submitted its report, Gafoor was transferred.

Gafoor was embroiled in another controversy when he reportedly told a news magazine that his subordinates did not obey him during the police response to the 26/11 terror attacks. Even though, Gafoor had always denied that he spoke to the magazine.
What saddened him most was not being appointed as the director general of the state police, but instead being made the DG (ACB) and managing director of the Maharashtra Police Housing & Welfare Corporation.
