When news of an accident that claimed the life a BNY Mellon employee, Durgesh Deore a few months back reached his colleagues in the US, they decided to raise funds for a cause.

The money that came from the US team was used by the BNY Mellon in Cybercity in Magarpatta to purchase helmets for its employees who used two-wheelers.

Moreover, around 2,700 employees in the city got together recently to organise a week-long safety campaign and distributed bands with, “I pledge to wear helmet,” to people.

“We lost one of our young employees in our Pune centre in a road accident and he was not wearing a helmet. He used work for the asset management team in the US. When the US team got to know about it, they decided to raise funds. We have welfare funds here, which we used to support his family and the fund that came from US was used to purchase new helmets for our employees,” said James C Mceleney, CEO, BNY Mellon International Operations (India) Pvt Ltd.

Dharminder Salwan, who led the road safety campaign, said the team wanted to do an event that creates a strong visual impact and also convey seriousness to the cause of road safety. “With a large number of young employees, the average age being mid/late 20’s, majority of them two-wheeler riders, this initiative couldn’t be more relevant. Huge banners with heart rendering images were displayed in parking zones to create impact,” he said.

One of the highlights was the human chain by all employees, carrying placards and posters at Cybercity to create awareness among citizens working and visiting Magarpatta.

A touching story of an employee who survived a crash thanks to his helmet was also shared with all employees to reinforce the importance and benefits of using a helmet.

Employees also roped in Save Pune Traffic Movement (SPTM), a citizens’ movement aiming to improve Pune’s traffic system. On the last day of the campaign, SPTM convenors, Rajendra Siddhaye and Ninaad Patil interacted with employees on various critical aspects about road safety.

“We had taken up the issue not just as a symbolic gesture or tribute to our dear colleague, rather we strongly believe in it as it affects each citizen of Pune. We will be working closely with SPTM in the long term to motivate responsible and safe driving voluntarily,” said Salwan.
